Executive Dean for Education and Research
Dr. Fawwaz Habbal has served as the Executive Dean for the Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) from 2007 to present. He is also a Senior Lecturer in Applied Physics.
Dr. Habbal joined Harvard in 2001, as Associate Dean for Research and Planning, at the Division of Engineering and Applied Sciences. Prior to Harvard, he held the position as Corporate Vice President, responsible for research and product design at Polaroid Corporation where he served as a Senior Research and Engineering Fellow as well. At Polaroid he was responsible for product delivery of many advanced products including magnetic storage, medical imaging, graphic arts, digital imaging, and consumer film and hardware. After leaving this position he initiated two start-ups related to imaging.
Dr. Habbal’s research interests focus on superconductivity, magnetic materials, silicon nanowires for photon detection and nano-photonics more broadly. He conducted research in the area of digital imaging and CMOS sensors. As a senior lecturer he has taught courses on nanoscience, bionano, and MEMS. Dr. Habbal holds a Ph.D. in Experimental Physics.
Former Director for Education and Research
Ms. Casasanto has been named the Associate Dean for Programs and Planning in the School of Engineering at Brown University. Before moving to Brown University, Ms. Casasanto was at Harvard’s School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, where she was the Director for Education and Research. Prior to that, she has experience working as a project manager in private industry.
In over a decade at the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences at Harvard, Ms. Casasanto has had a wealth of experience across many areas, including industry outreach and research planning, fundraising, administrative leadership and planning, educational program development, and space planning. She has also served as a member of the SEAS senior management team.
Ms. Casasanto holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Massachusetts, and is finalizing a master’s degree in liberal arts in the history of science from the Harvard Extension School.
Director of Instructional Laboratories, Director of Safety Program Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences
Dr. Chalah is Director of Instructional Laboratories (undergraduate teaching labs) at the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) and Lecturer on Engineering Sciences at Harvard University. He leads a team of engineers and collaborates with faculty to create an environment that encourages hands-on engineering education. As member of the research and teaching senior executive team, he applies new pedagogical methods in developing experimental and design-based activities as well as supporting SEAS's growing presence in biological and environmental engineering. Dr. Chalah serves in Harvard’s Teaching and Learning Consortium that provides policy recommendations for University leadership on substantive issues of teaching and learning as well as academic strategic planning.
He serves as the SEAS/Harvard Environmental Safety Compliance Officer (ESCO), SEAS Safety Committee Chairman, and Director of SEAS Lab Safety Program. Dr. Chalah received his PhD in Chemistry from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. His postdoctoral research at Harvard Medical School and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in the Cancer Biology department focused on understanding the switching mechanism between the cellular survival pathway and the programmed death pathway.
Dr. Chalah has also served as the Lab Senior Director of the undergraduate Chemistry Department at UMass Amherst, where he directed six labs and supervised several teaching assistants and undergraduate students. He also worked as a manager at OMO/Unilever International.
Special Assistant Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences
Ms. Wong works closely with the Executive Dean and the Executive Director of Education and Research to manage the development and delivery of international experience and other educational and research programs for educational leaders. Ms. Wong also coordinates the logistics for programs and supports planning and processes. Ms. Wong serves first-line information resource to help advise, guide, and assist in program participants and attendees when they arrive on campus. Ms. Wong has been at Harvard for three years, assisting the Education and Research Senior Team at the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences.
Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences
Professor Bertoldi is Associate Professor of Applied Mechanics at Harvard University. She earned master degrees from Trento University (Italy) in 2002 and from Chalmers University of Technology (Sweden) in 2003, majoring in Structural Engineering Mechanics. Upon earning a Ph.D. degree in Mechanics of Materials and Structures from Trento University, in 2006, Prof. Bertoldi joined as a PostDoc the group of Mary Boyce at MIT. In 2008 she moved to the University of Twente (the Netherlands) where she was an Assistant Professor in the faculty of Engineering Technology. In January 2010 Prof. Bertoldi joined the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences at Harvard University and established a group studying the mechanics of materials and structures.
Assistant Director for Undergraduate Studies in Biomedical Engineering Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences
Dr. Sujata K. Bhatia, MD, PhD, PE is a physician, bioengineer, and professionally licensed chemical engineer who serves on the teaching faculty of biomedical engineering and executive education at Harvard University. She is the Assistant Director for Undergraduate Studies in Biomedical Engineering at Harvard; she is the academic advisor for all Harvard undergraduate students in bioengineering and biomedical engineering. She is also a Lecturer on Biomedical Engineering. In addition, she is an Associate of the Harvard Kennedy School of Government for the Science, Technology, and Globalization Project; she works with students on projects for medical innovation in Africa, as well as global engineering education. She is additionally a faculty member in the Harvard Kennedy School Executive Education program on Innovation for Economic Development. Dr. Bhatia has personally mentored several Harvard undergraduates to complete innovative research and design projects that advance the field of bioengineering. She has previously served as an Assistant Dean for the Harvard Summer School, for summer sessions in 2012 and 2013. She has demonstrated a strong commitment not only to biomedical engineering research, but also to education, community outreach, and student life. Dr. Bhatia trained in the MD/PhD combined degree program at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. In 2014, she was voted by the Harvard College Class of 2014 as a Harvard Yearbook Favorite Professor.
Business Data Coordinator Harvard School of Engineering & Applied Sciences
Mr. Pozo is a scientist and he did research in Prof. Mooney’s, Parker’s, and Weitz’s lab at SEAS and Prof. Guo’s lab at Scripps Florida. He also instructed and demonstrated science and engineering to elementary students, middle school students, high school students, undergraduates, graduates, and post-doc/professionals. He started a new chapter in his career January and he works in Finance now at SEAS and one of his roles is being in charge of all the capital equipment they have in all our SEAS labs. He is a published Biomedical scientist in Cell and he has a military background.
Assistant Director of Undergraduate Studies in Applied Mathematics Harvard School of Engineering & Applied Sciences
Dr. Margo Levine is a lecture in applied mathematics. She was graduate teaching assistant and curriculum developer at Northwestern University since 2003. In 2007, Dr. Levine joined as a postdoctoral research scholar at the University of Chicago and moved to Harvard Medical School as postdoctoral research fellow in 2009. She is now assistant director of undergraduate students in Applied Mathematics.
Preceptor in Applied Physics Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences
Dr. Carolann Koleci is a teaching faculty in applied Physics at Harvard University. She earned her PhD degree from Brown University in Physics Education in 2001. She joined Worcester Polytechnic Institute as an assistant professor of Physics in 2002 and served as Director of physics education at WPI from 2001 to 2011. In 2012, Dr. Koleci moved to School of Engineering and Applied Sciences at Harvard University. She teaches a different physics course every seven weeks and she creates, develops and oversees the Masters for Physics Educators Program.
Assistant Director for Undergraduate Studies in Environmental Science & Engineering Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences
Dr. Ulrich is the Assistant Director for Undergraduate Studies in Environmental Science & Engineering at SEAS. In this role, Dr. Ulrich is the academic adviser for all of the Environmental Science & Engineering undergraduate students, and he teaches two ESE courses: Engineering Sciences 163 – Pollution Control in Aquatic Ecosystems and Engineering Sciences 6 – Environmental Science & Technology. Prior to joining SEAS in 2012, Dr. Ulrich was a Graduate Student Researcher and Graduate Student Instructor at the University of California, Berkeley. His Ph.D. dissertation
research studied the production and cycling of methylmercury in tidal wetlands in San Francisco Bay. As a graduate student, Dr. Ulrich received two research fellowships, including a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship and a CALFED/Bay Delta Science Program Predoctoral Fellowship, and was awarded an Outstanding Graduate Student Instructor Award for his teaching in an undergraduate course on water chemistry. Dr. Ulrich received a Ph.D. (2011) and M.S. (2006) in environmental engineering from UC Berkeley and a B.S. (2005) in physics from the Pennsylvania State University.
Biological and Environmental Lab Engineer Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences
Ms. Hamel is the Biological and Environmental Lab Engineer for SEAS. Managing both the Bio BL2 and Environmental Labs, she works to keep current laboratory experiments running smoothly and works with Professors on designing and implementing new laboratory protocols. Previously, she was Lab Manager and Head Technologist for a behavioral neuroscience laboratory at Northeastern University, and Head Technologist for Children's Hospital Boston Pathology Department. With a strong background in biomedical research and imaging, she also assists students working on independent research projects.
Senior Mechanical and System Lab Engineer Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences
Mr. Kjeer joined SEAS in 2012 as Senior Mechanical and Systems Lab Engineer. Previously, Mr. Kjeer was a General Engineering Coordinator at Norwich University and the Chair of the Physics and Engineering Department at Bethany Lutheran College in Mankato, MN.
He has his M.S. in Multidisciplinary Studies (Physics, Management, and Education), and his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering at Minnesota State University. Immediately following graduation, Mr. Kjeer entered the engineering field designing generators for Kato Engineering. During his time with this firm, he received one of his two patents for a new dynamo-electric machine design.
While a practicing engineer, Mr. Kjeer worked with program managers from NAVSEA and the Office of Naval Research to design and oversee AC and DC generator installations at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard and the Naval Station Norfolk. These projects included FFG (U.S. Frigate) and DDG (U.S. Destroyer) contracts. Mr. Kjeer is a former captain in the Vermont State Militia. Mr. Kjeer enjoys spending time with his family as well as maintaining and riding his collection of motorcycles.
Assistant Director MIT Global Education and Career Development
Mr. Smith oversees GECD’s daily drop-in hours. He provides career counseling to students and alumni from Electrical Engineering and Computer Science as well as students and alumni of Media Arts and Sciences and Comparative Media Studies. Mr. Smith holds a Master of Science in Counseling and Applied Educational Psychology from Northeastern University and a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from the State University of New York College at Brockport. His experience includes prior work in career counseling at Wheelock College and advising at Northeastern University.
